History of Gates Tennis Center
For more than 30 years, the Gates Tennis Center has been the finest public tennis facility in Denver. The late Charles C. Gates gifted the Center to the citizens of Denver in hopes of providing the absolute highest quality public facility for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Wanting to ensure its long-term sustainability, Mr. Gates expressed a desire that the Center be managed by The Park People. His hope was to see the Center managed in a way that did not depend heavily upon the city resources. Through this model, the Center has operated for more than 30 years without city funds.
Throughout its history, the Gates Tennis Center has fulfilled its important mission of providing a broad array of programming while remaining financially sustainable. But time took its toll on this prized facility, requiring critical improvements be made to ensure the Center remains one of the best public facilities in the nation.
Beginning in 2004, The Park People began working closely with the Gate Family Foundation, and crucial support from the City of Denver, the campaign to enhance this impressive public facility began.
The improvements to the Center had to extend beyond aesthetics, however, and also impact public tennis programming. This critical component lead to the decision to add a second story to the clubhouse building for the Colorado Tennis Association (CTA). By leasing this space the Center's long-term financial sustainability will be enhanced. More importantly, the CTA's presence at the Center will create a new program synergy with the Center's management team of Eric Rose and Sam Hitman, and Denver Parks & Recreation. The end result will be a greatly improved public tennis facility with compelling new programming for players of all ages and skill levels.
The project was completed in the spring of 2008. The upgrades make the Gates Tennis Center the premier public tennis facility in the Rocky Mountain region and among the recreational “crown jewels” in the Front Range. The beautiful facility coupled with the creative programming of The Gates Tennis Center management and staff has resulted in a significant increase in enjoyment and play at the Center. As a result Gates received a USTA Outstanding Large Public Facility of the Year award.
